We are deeply saddened to announce that on November 5, at the age of 84, Volodymyr Hryhorovych Bebeshko, an outstanding scientist, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, professor, doctor of medical sciences, passed away.

Born on February 7, 1938, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, elected on October 3, 2002, on specialization “Haematology”, doctor of medical sciences (1983), professor (1983), Director of the Institute of Clinical Radiology of the State Institution “National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine ”(1986 – 2011), Director General of the State Institution “National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (2000 – 2011), the Head of the Department of Haematology and Transplantology of the Institute of Clinical Radiology (since 2000), Honoured Leader of Science and Technology of Ukraine (2006). Laureate of the Awards of Ukraine in the science and technology (2007).

Volodymyr Hryhorovych Bebeshko was awarded the “Order of Merit” of the III class, the “Honourable Diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine”, the “International Order of Socrates” (Great Britain), the medal “1500th Anniversary of Kyiv”, Cavalier of the three classes (III, II, and I class) of the Order of St. Vladimir the Apostle.

Volodymyr Hryhorovych Bebeshko devoted his entire life to medical science.

V.G. Bebeshko was one of the leading scientists in the field of clinical and experimental haematology; initiated the creation of the National service of paediatric haematology in Ukraine; founded the scientific school “Radiation Immunohaematology”; first scientifically substantiated and implemented in practice the concept of restoring of the haematopoietic microenvironment in patients with leukemias, clarified the pathogenesis of bone tissues disorders in patients with malignant haemoblastosis, developed diagnostic methods and original methods of treatment of these disorders.

V.G. Bebeshko introduced a modern therapy of early and long-term oncohaematological effects in children and adults affected by the Chornobyl accident, formulated a program of preventive measures to minimize the stochastic effects of radiation exposure; introduced into clinical practice the method of transplantation of autologous and allogeneic stem cells of peripheral blood and bone marrow in radiation-induced haemoblastosis and haemopathy and a number of new diagnostic methods and treatment programs for the most common haemorrhagic diseases.

The author of 587 scientific works, including 12 monographs and 11 scientific copyrights.

The staff members of the State Institution “National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” expresses the condolences to relatives and friends and mourns with them.

The glorious memory of Volodymyr Hryhorovych Bebeshko will forever remain in our hearts.
